I am wonder why you want to edit STL file when you can re-import your models files ?

I hate to work with mesh files i had bad experience with it. always pretty ugly - but it can be done by converting mesh file in brep

whenever i lost my file i convert it on brep by following step import the mesh and then click on the settings (gear) icon down in the bottom right - pick "do not capture design history". From there you can right click the mesh and convert it to brep, which is a solid that can be edited.
TinkerCAD is by far the easiest way to edit STL files. It is free and online.
